Things to Do Before You List Your Home

Congratulations—you’ve decided to sell your home! Now what?

With the availability of homes for sale running low across the country, it’s a safe bet that yours will generate some interest pretty quickly once it hits the market.

But you want more than that. You want to get the best possible offer (or offers, if you play your cards right)—and that requires you to do some due diligence before the first potential buyer steps through the front door.

We’ve got you covered with a checklist of simple tasks you should tackle right now, before you list.

Your Before-You-List Checklist

  • Clear the clutter. The truth is, many home shoppers have trouble with spatial perception. One too many chairs in your living room? They may deem it too cramped. Countertop appliances visible in the kitchen? Not enough counter space. A display shelf of your favorite collectibles? Too fussy. The more extra “stuff” you can pack up and store away out of sight, the better your home will look to potential buyers.

  • Depersonalize.Buyers want to be able to visualize their own family in the space—not yours. So grin and bear it as you stash personal photos and mementos in drawers. Remember: The sooner your house sells, the sooner you’ll be able to put them all back on display in your new home!

  • Clean up.It sounds like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many sellers skip this crucial step. A dirty home is an instant turnoff for potential buyers. Make sure yours is sparkling clean from ceiling fan blades to baseboards before showings begin.

  • Paint.Touch up scrapes, smudges, and chips throughout your home. If you’ve opted for bold or polarizing colors in any of the rooms, consider going neutral. It helps buyers see the house as a blank canvas that they can personalize with their own style.

  • Add curb appeal. First impressions are a big deal. Wow potential buyers from their first glimpse of your home by sprucing up the exterior. From paint to plants to a porch swing, there are tons of ways to make your home say “welcome.” Get some great ideas for enhancing curb appeal in this article.
