How to Get Involved in Your Community

Moving is a major life change—and even though it’s hopefully a good one, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t take some getting used to.

Once you’ve unpacked every last box and arranged every piece of furniture just the way you like it in your new home, you might find yourself feeling a bit unmoored. That’s normal! But you don’t have to feel that way for long. One of the best ways to speed up the adjustment process and settle in to your new community is by seeking out ways to become a part of it.

Be a Good Neighbor: How to Get Involved

Don’t wait for the neighborhood welcome wagon to come to you—put yourself out there to connect with the community and learn the best ways to become a contributing member.

Here are a few ideas to get you started.

  • Talk to your new neighbors. They’re the neighborhood experts, after all, and can give you the lay of the land on things like school carpools, walking groups, and community activities. If you’re not the type to knock on strangers’ doors, take a less direct approach. Simply get out and about, take walks, smile and wave. You’ll be surprised how many people you can get to know just by being friendly.

  • Attend local events. From high school sports to festivals and farmers markets, check out what the area has to offer. Not only will it make you feel more engaged with the community, it also gives you the opportunity to meet people and learn more.

  • Volunteer.Contact local charitable organizations, schools, or service clubs to see where you can pitch in. Being invested in a good cause is a great way to foster a sense of belonging.

  • Join a group.Whatever your interests, there’s a good chance your new neighborhood has like-minded individuals. Join (or even start!) a group that meets regularly to garden, exercise, discuss books, or share meals. The options are endless, and it’s a surefire way to connect with neighbors who enjoy the same things you do.

  • Support local businesses.Explore the shopping options and restaurants that are owned and operated by locals. You’ll be putting money back into the community and helping strengthen it—and you might find some new favorite hangouts!
